With Vintage Christmas Tarot

First Impressions

My first impressions of the Vintage Christmas oracle are similar to what I felt about the Vintage Christmas Tarot which you can read about here. It's gorgeous, no doubt about that but there are a few things I feel are missing. Having said that, it's so brilliantly Christmas that I find myself drawn to it anyway and I’m really looking forward to bringing it out year after year. I have been waiting nearly a year to purchase the Vintage Christmas Tarot after seeing it on Maria the Arcane’s page but then I saw this oracle which is a new offering and I knew I had to get it and I’m glad I did. So let’s dive in.

The Packaging & The Guidebook

The packaging is ok and just enough to keep the deck safe. It's a two piece rigid box with a nice canvas finish and printed in full color except for the inside. Similarly to my review of the Vintage Christmas Tarot, I have combined packaging and the guidebook sections because this deck didn’t come with a guidebook, not even a digital one. It's also pricey, coming in at $80 not including shipping. It's a nice quality print but the price is steep for what you get. It's definitely a splurge. I really hope that it comes with a guidebook at some point. You will find keywords on the cards however so if you’re someone who uses the guidebook, you have a little bit of direction to start with.

The cards are a bit of the thin side but still really nice quality and easy to shuffle. They aren’t gilded which again, for the price feels like a let down. But, I do really like the matte finish and overall quality of the deck.

The Artwork

The artwork is stunning. The vintage images are so festive and warm but keep in mind, you won’t find any diversity here if that’s something you care to see. What you will find are lots of Christmas animals and plants and common holiday themes like trees, wreaths, gifts and santa inspired clothing. Everything has a light sepia like color so the cards feel like aged Christmas cards. In fact, you could prop these up on the mantel and no one would even know they’re oracle cards.

I had a hard time picking my favorite. I settled on fireplace but I went back and forth between that mulled wine and penguin. Fireplace feels like a snapshot of a christmas night and actually, it reminds me a lot of the silent night card from my deck Seasons of the Witch: Yule Oracle. It also reminds of a Ralph Lauren holiday promo (anyone a fan of Polo Bear?) and its what I imagine my holidays will look like at some point. But penguin is so cute. All of the animals are so adorable like mouse and kitten. Uh, heart melting all over the place. Its so hard not do an ahhhhhh when looking through the images.

With mulled wine and even yule log, these cards felt so earthy and also like the most pagan ones out of the deck. This is not a yule deck by any means. Christmas is absolutely the appropriate name which I don’t mind at all. I celebrate both yule and christmas so I had a yule oracle and tarot and now I have a christmas oracle and tarot. I love them all. As always, there are loads of photos to browse through to see if the artwork resonates with you.

Reading With this Deck

I’m a little surprised by my readings so far. The Vintage Christmas Tarot felt really good and accurate but this one is a little more all over the place. In the deck interview for example, I pulled so many themes from spiritual connection to grounding to new beginnings to learning and more. I guess if I had to find a common theme, it would be developing a spiritual practice and actually now as I right this, I have been contemplating starting my practice from scratch so perhaps it's more accurate than I realized. Sometimes it's like that with readings. They don’t always make sense at first until you reflect and process them. This is why I say there’s really no such thing as an inaccurate reading. There are readings that are very clear, readings that become clear after a little while, and readings that are for your soul and none of your conscious mind’s business.

Collective Pull

I pulled Gingerbread Man for you. This card represents happy times and good cheer. It means you have a lot to celebrate in the coming days and weeks, even if you’ve felt things have been especially hard lately. This is your reminder to enjoy the most of the holiday session and spend it with those people who you love and they love you in return. Christmas isn’t about the gifts, it's about the memories and joy of being in good company. Take that message into the holiday season and do your best to laugh and be merry. Drink just a tad too much (responsibly of course), eat just a little too much, and let your inner child come out to play. You deserve time to have a good time.

Season, Sign, Element and Sabbat

This deck is definitely winter, yule and the earth element. All of the images are 100% wintery and Christmas themed and while I don’t consider this to be a pagan deck, Yule is still felt through some of the imagery. It's a very earthy deck in the sense that there’s a lot of earthy images such as snow, trees, pine cones and all of those things you imagine for the holiday season. A lot of the scenes are set outside or enveloped in plant material. Not to mention, winter is associated with the earth element.

I also went with Sagittarius and Capricorn for the same reasons as the Vintage Christmas Tarot. I always associate Sagittarius with Christmas because most of the holiday season is experienced during Sagittarius even though Christmas occurs during Capricorn. So I just chose both.

Who is this deck for?

Christmas lovers, this is definitely one for you. It's a splurge but I think it's worth it if you’re someone who really loves to get into the holiday spirit. And if you are someone who has family and friends that are divination curious but not into some of the other decks, I think this would be a fun one to have for Christmas eve festivities. It's fun and lighthearted and gives people something familiar while also introducing them to divination. If nothing else, it would be great fun for a holiday party.

I can also see this being a fun deck for kids. It's so lighthearted and cheery and of course children love Christmas. I could even see it being a treasured heirloom or becoming a part of your family’s traditions.

Tarot Deck Companion

The Vintage Christmas tarot is the perfect companion hands down as they are from the same creator and made in the same style so they match perfectly. You can read about my review of the Vintage Christmas Tarot here.
